For general instruction in Amanita taxonomy, distribution, morphology, biogeography, ecology, and methodology, the basic requirements are transportation (yours or RET's), room, and board. Instructional rates are $30 per person/hour. Meals and transportation are the responsibility of participants.
A presentation focusing on basidiome development, taxon distribution, morphology, and taxonomy takes 5-6 hours for small groups. [Allow one day.]
Combining the above with a foray to collect material for review, learning some basics of macrophotography, learning the use of keys, and preparing for a microscopic session takes 2-3 hours in the field and 3 or more hours at a lecture-lab location. [Allow one day.]
A workshop focused on introduction to microscopic technique specific to the tissues of the genus Amanita takes a full day (including prep. and clean-up). [Allow one day.]
The presentation can take place at a different time than the microscopic workshop if both components are desired. The foray may be omitted.
The maximum group size if there is to be no microscopic workshop is 15.
The maximum group size with a microscopic workshop is 8. Number of binocular lab microscopes available for classes in Roosevelt, NJ is 2. One dissecting scope is also available (e.g., for support of sectioning). Those persons bringing their own scopes will want to bring scopes with an oil immersion lens. If you bring your own scope, you'll need to bring your own kit to support work with that scope. |
